Beaches and Beer: Aussie’s Grill & Beach Bar

Monday – Friday: 3:00 – 7:00 P.M.
If you’re looking for a slightly more foreign feel to your happy hour, Aussie’s Grill and Beach Bar is the place for you. The primarily outdoor seating is reminiscent of many bars and restaurants in Austin, but most do not also offer the option of watching as patrons play beach volleyball in leagues and tournaments at a court on the premises. Aussie’s offers court rentals during the week for $10 per hour per court, and $25 per hour per court on the weekends if tournaments are not being held. The palm trees that line the volleyball courts really lend to the idea that you are on the beach, and although I myself am not much of a volleyball player, watching as others played while I enjoyed my beer was extremely relaxing.
Happy hour features $2.50 domestic longnecks, $3 wells, $3 house margaritas, 10-piece chicken wings for $5 and select appetizers, such as their sloppy nachos or chips and queso for half price. The margaritas are extremely tasty, but taste essentially like any standard margarita, whether frozen or on the rocks. I enjoyed a pint of beer when I went, since that was one of the specials for that day, and provided a nice way to relax after a long day of classes.
The half-off appetizers are a nice addition to the happy hour menu, and are also available later at night from 11:00 P.M. – 2:00 A.M. The sloppy nachos were a great snack after class and were different from any other nachos I’ve had before, since they also included bits of sausage.
Located on Barton Springs Road near the intersection at Riverside, Aussie’s is not too far from campus. However, rush hour traffic becomes a problem, and a normally short car ride became quite lengthy as we caught nearly every light on our way there. Despite that, however, I definitely plan to come to Aussie’s again, if anything to experience the extremely different atmosphere that it offers.
