For anyone who might be unable to attend normal happy hour for any reason, Kona Grill, like several other restaurants, offers an interesting solution. From the hours of 9-11, the restaurant has reverse happy hour, allowing patrons to continue drinking at discounted prices following their meals. Prices at this time are the same as they are at happy hour from 5:00 to 7:00, with a variety of margaritas, draft beers and sake bombs ranging from $4 to $7.50. Though the sake bomb is the priciest item on the drink menu at $7.50, it comes with a sizeable bottle of Kirin Ichiban beer and a bottle of sake that refills the glass 4-5 times.
Kona also offers an assortment of half-price appetizers and entrees during both happy hours, including several sushi rolls for only a few dollars, pot stickers, egg rolls, chicken and shrimp dishes and entire pizzas, all for only $6.
Any time I have been to Kona, despite being crowded because of the great happy hour prices, the atmosphere is always laid back and enjoyable. Much of the seating is outside, so although it has been pretty hot the last few weeks, the cooler air in the evening is extremely pleasant. The service is also fantastic, with amiable waiters who bring your orders out pretty quickly, especially considering the crowds.
Located at the Domain in north Austin, Kona Grill may be a bit of a hassle for people living on campus or in downtown Austin, since it is a 15-20 minute drive from the area. If someone in your party is willing to act as designated driver, though, Kona is well worth the distance.
